How to Tell When a Man Likes You

Women are so far ahead of men in the field of understanding and using body language that they are already at a distinct advantage. Men, bless them, are about as clever in this department as a gibbon trying to get a fistful of raisins out of a narrow jam jar. That is to say, not very. Men are also simpler than women, fancying almost all of them almost all the time and giving out fairly obvious signals. If you can spot these signals, you will be ahead of the blonde, blue-eyed, air-headed competition --always a good thing. You should therefore start from the assumption that Man A does, in fact, like you. Your problem will be the common female one of Man A passing your acceptability tests. How complicated it all is. Anyway, let's not go into that but get straight on with things.

What to Look Out For

• Erect posture : The first sign that a man is taking an interest in you is that he will pull in his gut, stand or sit up more erect, and puff out his chest. He will do these things without realizing.
• Preening : Just like those birds on the Discovery Channel, men go in for preening. Tie straightening is a giveaway, as is hair smoothing, cuff-link tinkering, clothes brushing and so forth.
• Body position : If he turns his body toward you that's a positive sign. A more subtle sign is if he points his foot or feet toward you. Sometimes when trying to conceal his interest in you from someone (his girlfriend?) he will not turn toward you but will subconsciously point his foot in your direction. If you spot this, you will notice that every now and then he also glances at you. If he does, smile warmly or wink -- depending on what you think you can get away with. This should cause steam to rise from his trousers.
